he *did* — and the story there is really fascinating. https://twitter.com/90sSlowJamz/status/1263868548083933184
we got into this in our episode on the *original* 'Blexit' — in which Black folks fled the GOP. Robinson was a Black Republican at a time when that wasn't nearly as anomalous or socially disqualifying as it is today.
But Robinson was also a race man — he was an outspoken supporter of/participant in the Civil RIghts Movement, and he *deeply* distrusted Kennedy, who was reluctant to offer much support to the movement as he eyed the White House.
(Robinson said that they met once, and Kennedy admitted that he actually didn't know any Black people.)
But Nixon...Nixon was Jackie's boy. They met after Robinson's retirement at some party, and Nixon told him he was a fan. They got chatting, both found out they were from Southern California, and they ended up keeping up writing to each other regularly.
and Robinson thought he could work on Nixon. He didn't have much of a civil rights record *either,* but he would occasionally nod to the movement. https://bit.ly/3e8cIar
