Romney probably should have won that election, but he didn't because he juked hard right - accepting Trump's support! - and was caught on mic saying 47% of Americans "don't take responsibility for their lives," so I'm not sure Dems or the media did anything particularly bad.

McCain was entirely a media creation, but he also juked hard right with his VP pick and his "Iraq war is good actually" and "act erratic during a crisis" plans were not what the country was looking for.
