At the same time as I champion fossil fuel divestment ( #UofT, it's high time to follow the leadership of other universities that have divested!), env politics research reminds me that non-fossil fuel sectors also have social & environmental consequences (climate & otherwise) 1/4
As we work for climate justice, we need to pay close attention to the costs of competitive economic returns in other sectors (e.g., agriculture and renewable energy). Divestment is a first step, but not the end goal. 2/4
I argue that divestment "can maintain the status quo as readily as it can disrupt systems of power" -- so: here's to divestment as the first step to a deeper, just transition! 4/4
