Another day, another round of listening to horror musicals while I work to help keep me sane. First up, Frankenstein: A New Musical!
Oh Victor, you are just
Amen is the track that initially drew me to this musical. I highly recommend checking out this fan made animatic for the song:
Your Father’s Eyes is an odd track to be sure, it grinds the pacing to an absolute halt and focuses on a pretty peripheral character. I don’t really care for it much on its own, but DAMN does it come back in a big way and really hit you at the end of the show
The line “Was I alive once before?” will never not make me wat to cry 🥺
I really do appreciate how faithfully they adapted the original novel for this play. Sure the narrative jumps around quite a bit, but that’s the way it was in the book
So there’s a whole number where Victor gives chase to the Creature, and I can’t help but wonder, like what was your plan dude? Guy is way stronger than you and you are just barreling after him with zero strategy in mind
The Coming Of The Dawn, aka the AITA song! And yes, Victor. Yes, you are
Oh man, what a finale. I won’t spoil it if you haven’t listened to the soundtrack, but oh boy it’s really good. Of all the ways they could have deviated from the source material, I feel like they picked the most satisfying ending they could have. Oof, what a gut punch
Sadly the only legally available recording of this show that I know of is on YouTube, but sadly the audio quality is absolutely terrible. I’ve powered through it before, but I really can’t recommend seeing it that way
But you know what is available legally and in good quality on YouTube? The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals!
For some reason Team Starkid productions are one of the few examples of shows where “every character’s an asshole” that I thoroughly enjoy. A lot of times that can be a deal breaker for me, but for their shows, especially their horror comedies, it 100% works
La Dee Dah Dah Day is so damn catchy 😁
I know it’s played for laughs, but there are a few songs that make me wonder how much of the person is left after they get body snatched. Me. Davidson’s look of anguish when he calls his wife just feels so genuine, which is also hilarious
Cup Of Poisoned Coffe is my favorite song in the show, and it was also the number that made me realize I needed to sit down and watch the whole show. Here’s the animatic where I first heard it:
Ouch, Emma’s backstory coming in from out of now where to make me feel all the feels. I love it here, and I love it even more when they expand on it in Black Friday 🖤
It really is the little things that can make all the difference. There’s a tiny bit from Not Your Seed that gets used again in Black Friday, and no joke, my jaw hit the floor when I heard it. Makes for a great call back to TGWDLM for the fans who know the music really well
John McNamara is the best Starkid character ever, and I will fight you on that
I still can’t believe Working Boys is going to be a real musical someday, Starkid we don’t deserve you guys 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I can’t wait until we can all safely enjoy live theater together again. Hearing the crowd’s emotional reactions during Let It Out is one of my favorite things about this recording of the show. It’s both funny and devastating 😂
I love this final number to pieces. I know that these types of endings aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it works perfectly here 😊
That’ll do it for today, but next week I’ll definitely have to give Black Friday another watch. It’s a really fun follow up to TGWDLM. If anyone has any horror musicals they’d like to recommend, let me know!
