Putting up digital news for tragedies requires sensitivity. At @SAMAATV websites we did not put up names of passengers, the manifest or any mention of the dead. No one should find out about the death of a loved one from a website. This is how we chose to do it. Thread...
When we title or give headlines to separate video stories we avoid using the insensitive word, "Watch:" Our team uses words, "Video" or "Raw footage". We don't put up videos of disturbing triggering imagery. Rescue scenes, the site go
We do not ID the dead even if family members tweet because Dr Seemin Jamali said DNA tests were being done. It would take at least 24 hours. We do not need to chase traffic and pageviews on this kind of information. Our team leaves all those details out.
As the website for a television channel we act as a filter as well. If anything goes on air during the live broadcast that might not have been a good idea, we do not upload. It helps stem the spread. It is a small but imp thing we believe.
We also refrained from putting in our stories the aviation experts who, while theoretically correct, were speaking of textbook examples of how planes go down. We did not think that a story needed this. People need the facts in the initial stories.
As editor, I was amazed today at how our team, working remotely from home, converged on our WhatsApp group, kept updating. 1 sub takes notes, passes on, another updates, 3 extract, post video, developer fixes glitches. Social posts updates, reporters feed updates
It got confusing when we saw social explode with names of dead or survivors, I find it hard to hold back when we can quote others. But I think of the horror of being accused of insensitivity and it helps me.
Another tip, we place the helplines right at the top. We put in italics that this is a developing story. We also keep a simple URL with keywords and not the original headline as the headline will be updated over at least 12 hours
My argument: Names of the dead do not concern our wider audience, just the families, immediate circle. They would already be accessing that info. Plus it can be confusing w incomplete names. You don't want to give anyone a heart attack. misinformation.
What we are doing instead is drafting an unpublished story on the names of the dead. I've commissioned art to go with it to distinguish from the disturbing image. There were two options, I went with the plain on on left. No need to keep pushing destruction pics.
Just as a last note. We do the best with the resources we have and collectively apply our editorial judgement. We may not get everything right but at least on digital we can swiftly fix our mistakes transparently. It is a learning process... and humbles me every day
We also, just like a newspaper, have to think about what our social media will post around news of the tragedy and what other news will appear on the site. L&S stories on hold for now. Eid moon-sighting goes up. But we try to stay mindful of the overall look and feel.
