I applaud any effort to promote a policing career within the BAME community but really cannot help but think that to many this story is counter productive. Elite like doctors etc. History between the police and the BAME community has led to the push to recruit and that history comes from issues that have originated from events that often involve the communities we do most of our business. We talk about
making a service that represents the communities we serve. Not everyone has a degree. I for one don’t. I couldn’t afford to do one. In fact doing one was instantly dismissed for that very reason. How many people of all backgrounds are the same? How
many people are now going to instantly dismiss a police career as they don’t have a degree? Yes there is a non degree entry route but look at the wage and add in the stress of study time when the 999 calls are piling in. I wouldn’t want that stress at a key time in
my police career. I am not against degree entry. I can’t help but feel we are isolating many of the very people we are pushing to recruit. I don’t have a degree. I am not fast track. Does this make me lesser of a cop? Many argue the complete opposite. I came
from a background that we should be pushing to recruit from. Many from my sort of background are going to have been behind some of the very problems that we are trying to fix so why push them out?
If there are any BAME people out there that have considered a police career and
If there are any BAME people out there that have considered a police career and
has gone against it because you don’t think it’s for you as you feel you aren’t what we are looking for feel free to contact me for a down to earth chat. You don’t need a bit of paper or want to rush to be a chief to be a good cop.

To add degrees in some areas of policing are vital such as certain specialisms but when it comes to the street and dealing with day to day issues and linked criminality it is street knowledge and experience that counts.
