Hello wonderful people!! We got you covered if you missed the session. Enjoy the thread below. If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to comment.
As stated earlier, today's topic is about the power of Fasting and Prayer and our anchor verse is from Matthew 17: 21 which reads,"Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting."
Many of us know the importance of prayer, but sometimes we fail to realize that fasting is also as important as prayer; thinking fasting is not for the modern day Christian. But in Matthew 9:14-15, Jesus made it clear that His disciples will fast when He is no longer with them.
Matthew 9:15
"And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast."
We Christians are the modern day disciples of Christ, so we ought to fast and pray since He is no more with us in person. John 6:63 says, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life".
Here, we are made aware that it's the Spirit that quickens but the flesh profits nothing. The flesh is beneath the Spirit in ranks. The Spirit helps us to have influence. We can have influence depending on our spiritual level. How then can our spirit take over our flesh?
That takes us to fasting and prayers. It takes fasting and prayers to put the flesh under submission to the will of the Spirit. What then is fasting and prayer?
Fasting is the willing abstinence or reduction from certain or all food, drink or both, for a period of time whereas Prayer is a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God.
During fasting, some individuals abstain from tv or movies. This isn't a bad idea at all since this act plays a role in starving the flesh. Also fasting without Bible study and prayers equates to hunger strike.
Earlier we stated that fasting and prayers empower our Spirit. How then can we empower our Spirit without feeding on the word of God? This means that fasting, prayer and bible study, must always move together.
Why should we engage in fasting & prayers? This is because Jesus himself demonstrated it in Matt4:2, "And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward hungry." Again as stated in Matt9: 15, Jesus said His disciples will fast when He is not with them in person.
Our heavenly Father is a Spirit being, the carnal man cannot relate with Him. It takes the Spirit to relate with God, and it's fasting and prayers that puts the flesh under submission to the Spirit, which makes it easy to communicate with our Father.
Again, fasting and prayers pave way for miracles. Jesus told His disciples that the evil spirit can only be driven away by fasting and prayers. Man enters a different realm far from the physical, producing great spiritual results when we fast and pray.
Fasting and prayers helps us overcome temptations.Matthew 26:41 says, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."Fasting and prayers brings our bodies under submission to the Lord, who strengthens us to take dominion.
In conclusion, those who fast and pray often experience a greater discernment between good and evil. It's our prayer that God will help us cultivate the habit of prayer and fasting so we will always be sharp in the Spirit.
