There is something deeply wrong with the American psyche and it’s observable in the reaction to COVID, the countless mass shootings, and the idea of exceptionalism among the remainder of the world
There’s def something to be said about the way American society rewards those who inflect the most pain on the most people: either with fame or fortune. If you do it violently and quickly you get fame, if you do it legally and over a long period of time you get rich AND famous
Inflict*
American society has driven home the idea of the individual being greater than the community (within white folks) since its inception. The ironic part is that the points of America’s history where it produces the most wealth is in the aftermaths of things that force community
Capitalism has literally implanted itself into the communal brain of the American people and it’s turned us into enthusiastic martyrs of capital. You will gladly work for a fraction of your value for a boss who compounds your worthlessness because you feel “lucky” to be employed
Individualism has destroyed the American people’s willingness to amount to anything greater than the sum of their parts. It’s broken down the fabric of community so much that it’s probably irreconocible, pair this with the violence the country is founded upon you get modern day!
I’m done with this thread but stop asking why do we have so many more shootings than any other country. We don’t treat one another like human beings, we look at one another like a tax liability. You’re primed to think you’re owed everything and owe nothing, that’s America
