This week, I and other @theBMA committee chairs wrote to Trust CEOs across England to urge them to:
- adopt risk scoring tools
- alongside measures to allow staff at risk of serious #COVID19 infection or death to be assigned to less exposure prone duties

The major driver behind this work has been the clear emerging evidence of the disproportionate effects of #COVID19 on different ethnicities. @TheBMA was one of the first organisations to highlight this impact on BAME communities publicly and to call for an review into this
We have also heard about the impact on our members. We wrote to Sir Simon Stevens back in April, calling upon NHS England to develop a risk profiling framework that takes into account not only age, but other factors such as ethnicity, sex and comorbidities.
Unfortunately, we have still not so far seen a clear national approach on this that will give adequate and consistent guidance to employers re: risk assessments. @CNagpaul again wrote to Sir Simon Stevens this week, to highlight our ongoing concerns. https://www.bma.org.uk/news-and-opinion/call-for-risk-assessment-clarity
These are really stressful times for staff working in the NHS, and even more so for those staff who have grown increasingly concerned about their own personal safety. The lack of helpful direction from NHS England and Employers on this thus far is unacceptable.
This is why @TheBMA has:
-Written directly to NHS England
-Written to Trust CEOs
-Updated our own guidance (including links to risk-assessment tools): https://www.bma.org.uk/advice-and-support/covid-19/your-health/covid-19-risk-assessment
- Continued to raise awareness through the media & briefings.
Hope to see progress made soon.

And finally, thank you to all Trusts and employers who have adopted these risk assessment tools, and involved staff-side reps in their development and implementation. It makes a huge difference.
