Looking at this thread, this goes beyond religion. Even politicas. I have close friends from major Nigerian tribes. My friends from the North believes Yorubas are sellout, sometimes on the sides of Easterners. My friends from the East also say Yorubas are sellouts. https://twitter.com/suleimana/status/1263693386797723650
Both regions say “you can’t trust a Yoruba man... he’s everybody’s friend”. I think this still links with the idea of being at peace with everyone that’s embedded in the Yoruba culture. How this started I don’t know, but for a Yoruba man... peace (and enjoyment) comes first.
Being able to disagree with people & still tolerate them is a great thing. I think it’s what the entire Nigeria should embrace. My mum is a confirm Mama Jesus. Her father was an Imam, her grand father an Oro worshipper. She became a Christian after marrying one. No issues.
We just want to do our owambe in peace. Muslim, Christians and evening Babalawo. The Owambe spirit born out of Yoruba people love for enjoyment and good things and the family comes first. Your cousin is your cousin irrespective of their religion or believes.
I know 2 Yoruba families where the couples are different religious beliefs. Husbands are Muslims and wives are Christians. Pray your pray make I pray my pray. Kids follow whosever they like. Both couples in their 50s with kids in 20s. Should this not be the spirit?
My friends will gather at my place for Christmas food. I will be at theirs for Sallah. If I’m unable to make it to their place. They know how to ship my Sallah meat. Peace is good and sweet. Life is too great to be at war because of religious and political differences.
I know there are chances for history to part of the religious tolerance of south westerners. May be @tundeleye can do a thread. But it’s something we can’t all ignore. It’s conversation worth having and a culture worth emulating.
