Unless you have read NSC 68 you should probably not discuss Containment.
NSC 68: "As for the policy of 'containment,' it is one which seeks by all means short of war to (1) block further expansion of Soviet power, (2) expose the falsities of Soviet pretensions, (3) induce a retraction of the Kremlin's control and influence, and"
"(4) in general, so foster the seeds of destruction within the Soviet system that the Kremlin is brought at least to the point of modifying its behavior to conform to generally accepted international standards."
All of the above are worthy of pursuit against the People's Republic of China.

Note the "one which seeks" language.
An Assumption / Imprecise Shorthand Fail is:

Containment = Soviet Union Only = 1980s Arms Buildup Only = Bankrupt Soviet Union As Only Outcome
Read the source documents, try to gleam the original intent, apply current context / constraints / restraints, validate whether or not previous approaches are still applicable and incorporate them when useful.
