Alberta is now trying to attract new met coal production. Globally there is growing interest and tech for low carbon steel production to reduce/replace coal use in steel making - eg http://www.oecd.org/greengrowth/GGSD2019_Steel%20and%20Cemement_Final.pdf (via @bataille_chris). https://twitter.com/CBCOlivia/status/1263827776450236419
If the goal is truly attracting investment there is significant potential to use AB's core strengths to advance low carbon steel production technologies, for example with hydrogen. Companies like @voestalpine are even actively looking for partners.
(And why yes I did take/drag my family to Stahlwelt “steel world” on our last visit to extended family)
And as @bcshaffer observed - this was apparently a 2 step process to open up these areas, first with the - until now - head scratching decision to de-list a bunch of parks. https://twitter.com/bcshaffer/status/1263855083206275072?s=20
Down the rabbit hole now, but this coal policy revision was being discussed by lobbyists with GoA as early as Feb

now can we add potential coal resources to the map?
previous image from - looks like quite a lot of bit coal in that overlap region if I'm reading this correctly
