Read a bunch of stories from 2009 when college football was faced with another pandemic in H1N1 or the swine flu. A lot of eerily similar challenges. And similar fears. But only one Div 2 game cancelled. There were treatments but NO vaccine at the time. Surreal to read about now
Bama had 10 players dealing with it and over 100 students on campus
Mack Brown was head coach at Texas and was terrified it would deplete roster
Ole Miss had 27 players sick - starting QB and RB included and the student body had 400(!!!) students sick with swine flu
Wisconsin faced same issue - 40(!!!) football players and 200 students
Georgia was educating players on how to prevent the spread and gave out bottles of hand sanitizer to every player -- also noted here - NO vaccine for first 6 weeks of season
Georgia's athletic trainer even said they avoided giving players prescription drugs to treat it because they "weren't in a high risk group"
How about these comments from Dr James Turner the president of American College Health Association explaining that it wouldn't impact 99% of population but those "at risk" needed to be worried and also added "it's perhaps been sensationalized to a degree" đź‘€
whoa...just found a newer number for Ole Miss team...it was as high as 38(!!!) players
Just to be clear...I am not saying that Swine Flu is the same as Covid 19. Swine flu got more people sick but wasn't as deadly
Cases in US: 60 million
Hospitalizations: 273,000
Deaths: 12,483
