Anyone who says students should not return back to res, either does not live at res, is comfortable at home with no pressing issues that make them want to return, or plain dead doesn& #39;t understand that our issues are many.
In my view, online learning would be more effective if we were at res. Not this nonsense we& #39;re subjected to. I think if we& #39;re expected to advocate for those who& #39;d like to go back to res, count me in. Wanna talk health and safety? I& #39;ll engage. Wanna talk quality of learning?
I& #39;ll engage, you see, if you& #39;re going to subject me to a system that nobody asked for, put me through strenuous online activities without considering the fact that I& #39;m dealing with bigger things at home, how are you acting out of my best interest? Yes, giving me data is nice.
But do you give me network signal? Do you give me the ability to tell my siblings or neighbours they are making noise and that they should switch off their music? A neighbour who probably doesn& #39;t even like me?
At the end of the day, your "we will make it out together" statement, excludes me and my issues. We can turn a blind eye all we want...but online learning is anti-poor. Challenge me.
We need change. That change will not come from a group of privileged minds that run a University like a private business (sort of ishttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤷🏿‍♂️" title="Man shrugging (dark skin tone)" aria-label="Emoji: Man shrugging (dark skin tone)">) but these are real human beings. Before I am a student, I am human.
The fact that some students have been on Twitter contemplating deregistering should send red flags to management. You think sending 50 emails a day telling us to seek psychological support alleviates our issues? Forgetting that, that same email requires network signal?
Come on now. In the end, you& #39;ll hear them say "Witsies, we survived". No sir, WE survived. You did nothing but subject us to unbearable struggles that left some of us along the boarderline. You never struggled. We did.
Now, what good is a tantrum thrown if suggestions are not added? I suggest we go back to res. There& #39;s unlimited WiFi and that means that all issues of data are gone. No external noises. No unnecessary disturbances.
For students who do not stay at res, they should be allowed to go to campus and utilise campus resources as they& #39;d normally do. Rather implement safety measures like sanitizing, social distancing and wearing a mask there then.
At least we& #39;ll be back to normalcy and we would not complain. Online learning can still continue to avoid contact, but our issues would be alleviated. We& #39;d have better and equal access to resources. Not this concept of Natural Selection being imparted on us.
Our silence is affirmation for them that their measures are working for us all.
I& #39;ll stop here.
