If you want to know why I'm so bent out of shape about universities reopening:
Grad students' health and rights are almost always left out of guidelines, leaving more room for disparity in treatment. Some depts/advisors will protect them, others will find new ways to exploit them
Want to limit the number of people in lab? Encourage grad students and post docs to work odd hours.
Want to reduce your exposure to students? Tell a Teaching Assistant their pay depends on their ability to support undergrads
Grad students and postdocs might not have health insurance. They might not be 18-25 (most aren't). They might be supporting families and struggle financially.
Most schools have never put in clear rules about how they need to be treated
Most universities rely on the cheap labor of postdocs and grad students. But I've only seen provisions being considered for the health of the students and faculty.
"Trainees" have always faced differences in care without the ability to report abuse. I don't see that changing now
Oh, and this isn't even to mention how many students rely on visas. And many take public transportation from off campus. And have no set vacation days. And are treated differently based on race/gender/etc.
Anyways, want to see your university admin squirm? Ask them how they will protect grad students and post docs and janitors and delivery people and all folks other than undergrads and faculty.
