Today is, of course, #WorldGothDay ! As a former goth (and successful graduate of the #Goth2Boss program), I like to celebrate each year by posting some of my favorite goth tracks. And then delete the entire thread and pretend like this never happened.
Where else to begin but at the beginning - Joy Division in 1976 paved the way for everything to come later.
It wouldn't be #WorldGothDay without The Sisters of Mercy. In addition to being one of the most well-known goth bands, they're also a DJ's best friend as their tracks are long enough for a trip to the bar for a whisky sour.
I have to mention at this point my hometown goth band, Bella Morte. They started our local goth night and gave all of us wayward misfits a place to call home. #WorldGothDay
I have seen them play dozens of times, standing in the front row at every show. They've been good friends, neighbors, roommates, and more over the years. Just before I moved away they had a show and invited me up on stage to introduce my favorite song and join them one last time.
Getting to the end of the afternoon here on #WorldGothDay on the east coast. Industrial music doesn't technically count as goth, but the scenes overlapped heavily. Most people know industrial via Nine Inch Nails, but my favorite was always KMFDM.
In The Nursery is one of those hidden gems, and one of my all-time favorites. It's not danceable, but delicious to listen to on a rainy day like today. Here's the first track off my favorite album: #WorldGothDay
End of the road here for #WorldGothDay so I'll close with the gothest song to ever goth, a song so goth that Black 3.0 looks like khaki Dockers by comparison.
And I'm out. This thread will disappear in the morning sun, like a true creature of the night.
