RISKIER BUSINESS: A new report by RSPB @Natures_Voice and @wwf_uk out today: https://bit.ly/2yoVPZX
The report finds that a land area nearly as big as the UK is required to supply annual UK demand for just 7 commodities such as soy, palm oil and cocoa, much of this in countries at high risk of #deforestation
The UK’s overseas land footprint associated with the production of soy, cocoa, palm oil, timer, pulp & paper, beef & leather and rubber has increased by 15% compared to our 2011-2015 analysis, drives ~28MtCO2e annually, and could be affecting more than 2,800 threatened species.
We cannot afford to continue destroying ecosystems that are so vital in the fight against #ClimateChange and home to the world’s most precious #wildlife. As the UK prepares to lead @Cop26, the government can and should lead the way in greening agricultural commodity supply chains
Global voluntary efforts to halt deforestation have largely failed. That is why we are calling for the introduction of a mandatory due diligence obligation that requires businesses to identify, mitigate and report on risks+impacts in their supply chains or investment portfolios
Let’s call on government and business leaders to ensure that for the next #BiodiversityDay, deforestation rates have dropped, #nature is recovering, #forests and other valuable ecosystems are protected and shielding us from future outbreaks of zoonotic diseases like #COVID19
