*incoherent d-2 thoughts and noises* a poorly contained thread
feel free to mute the thread obviously, though i’ve already made a mess of the tl so for that i’m sorry !! keeping it contained to this thread now though. for reference i will be starting on my 3rd listen so these aren’t fresh thoughts but not fully-formed either
also for reference, i haven’t read through the lyrics so this is purely based on how the music sounds
moonlight was an INSTANT favorite. it’s funky and vibey and extremely up my alley/reminiscent of my own music taste and what i grew up on!! big epik high/nujabes vibes and i loooove it. it’s so cool to have yoongi producing music that FEELS catered to me!!!
daechwita i’m SO fond of. i cant help but feel incredibly proud of music they make that is strongly tied to korean roots... pride of and for my nation fucking skyrockets. i won’t touch on the mv here but i have many Important thoughts about it (also just Horny thoughts).
i love his flow changes in daechwita (there’s a part that reminds me of joon’s verse in ddaeng!) and the “pause” he snuck in?? incredible! he’s so good at integrating his own lyrics and flow from past songs into new ones in a way that is transformative that it doesn’t
come off as redundant or lazy! it’s like he knows his brand and his sound and knows how to maximize it for effect?? literally king shit re: his fame
what do you think? is lyrically intense just from what i can hear/understand. he incorporated the bleep again! i want to examine those lyrics more bc i wonder how different (or conversely, similar) the context is to the last time he used that technique.
wdyt is also the third appearance of big house big cars big rings and i cant bring myself to be upset about it. he WILL be held accountable if he ever uses it again tho!! otherwise, it’s an awesome track but not my top pick!
strange took me by surprise! it has a super modern/western sound that i don’t usually gravitate towards but it’s actually so so fucking good. namjoon on the track is PERFECT! and i think it’s bc this kind of music reminds me more of joon’s style/voice? super good collab choice
though i’m also just a sucker for namgi at any given moment. i’m extra fond of namjoon’s second verse when the autotune kicks in?? sooo yummy and reminiscent of a verse in mr. doctor by epik high i thin? also note: the eerie piano at the beginning and end and the music box tinkle
28 MMM also very modern but i love love it. it gave me maybe mid 2010’s khiphop vibes? also a very specific sound that i love. also, the snaps!!! whoever the girl is (adora?) is incredible in the track and reaaally ads to it. niihwa isn’t very noticeable but supplements him well
overall i really really like 28! quick shift to burn it! unfortunately max does absolutely nothing for me here. i love how he incorporated tear here, another example of the remastering i mentioned earlier and it’s GREAT. the i enjoy the strong bass a lot and i think i’m catching
a slight incorporation of shadow too? cool! the rap reminds me a little of the last (besides tear, ofc) and i think it’s bc there are portions of slower and purposeful rap and he uses a lower key.
the switch to people gives me a bit of whiplash but i’m not complaining at all!! it’s exactly the breath of air the album needed. the xylophone(?)-esque noises are so good and the FEMALE VOCALS!!!! she does wonders for the rap and even better when they start singing together!
also yoongi REALLY takes advantage of his singing lessons in this album (wait till we get to the last one!) and i love it so much. it breaks up a bit predominantly rap genre album without too many collabs. ugh can i fangirl about the harmonies some more!? SO GOOD.
also real quick pause to compliment his rap itself? i don’t think i’ve given him enough compliments!! it’s so versatile and he’s really learned to chameleon his style without getting lost u know! his rap is just so GOOD there’s nothing more to be said. i love it the most!!
honsool.. oh honsool... it was love at first listen like moonlight. (honsool is like an abbreviation for drinking alone btw). it’s like he’s singing through honey, and it encompasses the feeling of drinking alone VERY well. the melancholy!! the beginning is probably something
like hearing voices thru the haze tho it reminds me a little of satellites by last dinosaurs (which is 1:45 of pure dolphin noises LOL). it almost gives me the picture of being suspended in an ocean. or like trying to swim/walk through (an ocean of) tar.
LOVE the voice modifier so so much. idk how often this technique is used but it also reminds me of a specific song that i listened to a lot in my formative years (can’t pinpoint it atm.. is it epik high again?). genuinely one of my favorites
with great exasperation we take a break to enjoy yoongi painting/crafting(?) while listening to his own mixtape. oh well, if he gives us any insight that will be cool to add to this thread (though i hate to lose the momentum).
O K yoongi just abruptly finish ur soundwave and leave like that!! i will resume my thoughts now cuz if i don’t they’ll get lost (they already kind of are). apologies for the bad grammar and typos. here we go!
interlude: set me free surprised me SO MUCH!! the last two really threw me for a loop and i’m very thankful for it. more snaps! and birds chirping! gives me sitting in a mountain park at dawn when fall turns to winter (in korea) imagery? kind of specific but that’s the vvvibe.
i was SHOCKED at the gentleness and breathiness? especially when he really gets into it during the second half of the song. is breathy crooning a thing? like dew and blooming and yearning. and the echoes! what an experimental piece! i went apeshit when the instrumental went from
soft finger plucking to AN ELECTRIC GUITAR!!!!! ROCK GENRE!!!! another of my absolute favorite genres. i NEVER expected that from him at ALL. i have the words space rock, soft rock, and dream pop in my head but i don’t have enough /knowledge/ on rock to say anything definitive.
not my top pick but i love that it’s there and what it brings to the album. serene respite. it also primes us for the next and last song!
dear my friend... HOOOO. ok where to start. it’s featuring nell, one of my favorite bands of all time. the complete genre flip still took me by surprise here! i need to point out the delicate piano at the beginning/end here before i move on... it’s sort of wistful and hopeful
at the same time. the song makes me feel almost like i’m intruding? i said the same thing about eight but it’s a pretty different. eight felt voyeuristic, whereas this just feels private. which makes sense bc he is addressing a specific type of private topic that bts in general
often steer clear of. the music itself reminds me a bit of younha? i don’t really listen to her anymore but i did a lot when i was younger and i think it’s the combination of a traditional piano (vs keyboard) and rock. kim jongwan does a fantastic job capturing emotion here!
no complaints! i like that his rap is a bit melodic/mutable(?) here since the song is overall very sweet (yet powerful) sounding. there are themes of changing, time, perspective, etc. which is very yoongi of him i think. he’s pretty sentimental and introspective when he’s not
turning his brain off for self-preservation reasons. i can actually hear the lyrics pretty well here bc it’s slower and he enunciates clearer. it’s a pretty fucking sad story and i don’t want to dwell on the lyrics for too long bc thats not what i’m here for so maybe later!
the way this concludes the mixtape reminds me a little of thank you for breathing by tablo, not in sound, just in execution. and the chorusing at the end... whew. i hope this song, despite the lingering sadness and nostalgia, serves as closure? idk the more i listen to it the
more it feel like that’s its purpose (but what do i know). this was just such a powerful mixtape, so subversive and i’m very proud of our daegu boy who has grown leaps and bounds! this thread started getting dumb long so i cut a lot of thoughts out but that’s it! yay!
ah real quick can i mention that i’m bonkers for :24 in 28?? fuckign stellar
