Advice to anyone thinking about university, or in university, in a fairly long thread.

I hope this is useful.

It’s what I’m sharing when asked to speak on the subject, starting with how to evaluate whether the university deserves your business.
Ask them how they’ve attempted to recreate culture & learning from offline to online during coronavirus.

Ask yourself whether they’ve put in the research, experimentation, thought, creativity & effort they expect from you as a student.
Ask to speak to some of their students to see how they feel, as customers.

And tune in to the online forums to hear how students are feeling.

Evaluate universities on their actions, not on their expensive buildings or glossy website.
Coronavirus creates benefits and opportunities for students.

You can now learn almost anything, anywhere, and many jobs allow you to work anywhere.

News story before coronavirus was Brexit, which was all about stopping your freedom to work anywhere.
A combination of online collaboration tools and a move towards freelancing means that the world is your oyster.

That world needs dreamers, persuaders, leaders, artisans and craftspeople, because technology can’t replace these things that make us human.
So find things that develop skills that allow you to play to these strengths.

And there’s nothing wrong with deferring from uni for a year to do so.

Even halfway through your course.
Go and volunteer. Take some online courses.

As an educator, I promise you that any experiences you gain from a year of independent learning is likely to make you a better student.
As a vocational educator, I say it’s wrong to shove poorly served students into a struggling economy.
Next steps for students? May I suggest the following;

1.Double down on checking out whether your uni deserves your cash

2.Get ready to learn online, seeing it as an opportunity to work without borders
3.Strongly consider deferring for a year

4.If you do, then use the time wisely

5.Skill up. Stand Out. Serve your community.
