Okay, y'all, let's talk about sensitivity readers for a sec (hi, I'm a sensitivity reader among other things):
- Hire them!
- Hire them EARLY in your process - it will save you a LOT of grief.
- Sensitivity readers are NOT your "seal of approval" - just because I checked over ~
~ your work, does not guarantee that it is 1000% unproblematic. I am just one person with one perspective.
- Just because you hired a sensitivity reader, it does not mean your work is above reproach.
- If a sensitivity reader doesn't want their name on the final product, then ~
~ something has gone VERY wrong.
- Credit your sensitivity readers for doing that work unless they explicitly don't want to be credited in that way - even better? ASK US.
- The body of work a sensitivity reader is consulting on still belongs to the client - you are still ~
~ responsible for what you publish, don't throw your sensitivity reader under the bus.
- I can't speak for others, but I do know that I'm not going to charge you for asking me a question! JUST COME AND ASK! Tell me what you're doing and I'll tell you whether I think ~
~ you need a sensitivity reader or not.
- Can't afford one? Think again! Again, I can't speak for others, but I am 100% willing to flex my rate to make it fair but still possible for you to afford a sensitivity reader.
