let's talk about how Rick Riordan writes about non-traditional families and the harships of single parents and their children.

abandoned kids, absent parents, and familial tension are common themes in the books.
most, if not all demigods grew up with their mortal parent. this played greatly on their personalities and characterization.

some demigods develop resentment over their godly parent.

some acted indifferent but deep inside they wanted the approval of their godly parent.
let's start with percy.

I think it is mainly because of sally jackson that he didn't turn against the gods.

sally is loving, caring, nurturing, and she always thinks/talks of Poseidon well without making Percy hope that his father will come back for them.
percy is vocal about how abusive his step-father is. he always asks Sally why she stays with Gabe and how she deserves better.

and Sally listens and agrees. I like this because some parents chose to ignore/not listen to their kids when it comes to the abuse of their partner.
Still, Percy suffers because he is always getting ship off to boarding schools. He always worries about his mom too.

He mainly disliked Poseidon not because he left Percy, but because Sally is suferring with Gabe because of the greek god.
I think Percy didn't feel abandoned because Sally's love as a mother is more than enough for him.

Still, he won't admit it but he craves for his father's approval and acknowledgement of him.
Let's now get to Luke.

Luke probably is the complete opposite of Percy's case.

Luke's mortal parent, May Castellan got sick after being rejected by the Oracle.

This made her mentally unable to attend to her son. Her "episodes" also scarred Luke when he was a kid.
Not only does Luke have an absent parent, his godly parent is extensively the reason why his mortal mother got sick.

So not only did Luke feel abandoned by his mother, he also felt hatred towards Hermes for leaving May sick.
Luke is also the first example in the books, of a character that made his own family. This was with Thalia and Annabeth when they're on the run.

but we also saw how the members of his formed family turned their backs on him when he joined the forces of Kronos.
(Kind of not surprising now how easily Kronos manipulated him, right?)
off to Annabeth. Annabeth was a full time camper, she doesn't go home to her mortal family and even ran away from home when she was only 7 years old.

annabeth's step family made her feel like an inconvenience. She also felt that her mortal father doesn't really care for her.
With monsters (and spiders due to Arachne's revenge against children of Athena) disturbing Annabeth's home life, her mortal family was also always put into danger.

Annabeth had a found family together with Luke and Thalia, but soon after Thalia died and Luke left her behind.
we can say that this is why Annabeth dreamed of building something permanent, and how she can be territorial with her friends.

because she never had a constant, stable support system with her one family never fighting for her, and one who now left her behind.
I think this is why she never gave up on Luke, because her mortal family didn't fight for her when the going gets rough. They were endangered everytime monsters attack but instead of fighting the monsters with/for her, they isolate and made her feel guilty.
And Luke was family.

Of course, Annabeth now has a better relationship with her mortal family. She also now have a stable support system with her boyfriend and friends at camp.
off to Jason. In the books, i think Jason is the example of a kid who didn't grew up with parents at all.

he was raised by Lupa, raised by wolves. his upbringing polished the traits of a soldier and a leader into him.
his childhood drilled into him how he is a member of the legion.

was he cared for? he was with his sister Thalia for a very short time. but I think it was all tough love with Lupa. with the wolves, you are left behind if you're not able to fend for yourself.
still, I think Jason grew up to be loving and nurturing even tho he probably didn't experience the same thing when he was a kid

he wasn't a star of the legion just because he can fight well, its also because he earned their trust. he's dependable and truly cares for his friends.
jason managed to get in touch with his sister Thalia again. he made both camps his family.
WTF AM I CRYING FOR JASON GRACE DESERVE BETTER, HE NEVER HAD A NORMAL FUNCTIONAL FAMILY, NOT EVEN A SINGLE PARENT UNLIKE OTHER DEMIGODS!!

BUT HE MANAGED TO MAKE BOTH CAMPS HIS FAMILY!!

HE IS SO LOVING, SO KIND THAT HE NEVER HESITATED TO SACRIFICE HIS OWN LIFE FOR OTHERS
