why kim taehyung is an exceptional songwriter and composer, or a few thoughts on sweet night: a thread ♥️
he starts the song so low, so deep, because there's uncertainty, fear, insecurity in the lyrics "i still hope the door is opened", he's nervous, so the melody begins that way, a bit tentative, his voice will go higher as he reaches out for love, but for now he's afraid to hope+
"cuz the window/opened one time with you and me", see how the song "opens" and we begin to hear backing vocals, as the window opens in the lyrics so does the song itself open sonically and so does his voice which reaches out as he sings in yearning "if you'd want me now"+
the chorus, the sudden burst of sound, there's so much of it, as he sings about "feeling more", but then see how his voice from all the way up comes a little down as he "reach[es] the shore", from "how could i know" to "reach the shore", see the journey of young love in this bit+
the journey of young love from insecurity "wonder if you'd want me now" to closure and security "ships in the night", this whole journey is conveyed through his voice in the chorus, see how his voice rises and rises and then finds a point where it settles, as his love settles+
the repetition "night night night", not just for the euphony, but also theirs is a story that lives on, there isn't a proper end to this song as their story hasn't ended either, so the song doesn't really end in terms of melody, it continues in this humming to show continuity+
"i wanna ask you if this is all just in my head" his voice gets deeper when he speaks about his insecurities and not believing he's worthy of his love, "my heart is pounding tonight", he sings that from the bottom of the ocean, now watch him swim up to the light in the next part+
the highest point of this song, "if i pulled you closer", at last the moment of intimacy, the desire being fulfilled, in terms of sound the song erupts here, his voice reaches the heavens as he pulls his love closer, everything explodes, this is where you get goosebumps+
see how the second chorus is more euphoric, how he stresses every syllable "but i had already" this is the chorus after he found the one, his voice rings loud and sure as he's singing now not just in hope or fear or yearning but as a man who found his love and is loved in return+
and here the song doesn't end, it just eases into this soft humming as time stops, their story is just beginning, hence no ending to this song, it eases off from the chorus, "we were ships in the night", finally settled, finally together, he whistles his way into a shared future+
this is the whistling of a man giddy in love skipping along his way to meet the love of his life, the sound of a man who finally found comfort and security in the one he loves, this is the sound of love being reciprocated, do you hear the joy in this? this is where he ends it+
"we were ships in the night.... night.... night...." , im welling up as i write this, the yearning, the fear, the hope, all that comes with falling in love, but look at the poetry of this line, the poetry in this song, how do you write about love like this? with such reverence+
he doesn't get his due as a lyricist n a composer, i hope as u walked through this song with me u can see how magical this song truly is, how its sound and vocals complement its lyrics and story perfectly, from low to high, from trepidation to comfort to joy, THIS is a love song+
