Mental HealthđŸ§”

I had a conversation with a worker we intend to hire last week. When he showed up for the first meeting, I noticed he was tensed and a bit fidgety, coupled with stuttering which made him feel a bit uneasy to contribute to the conversations we were having.

So,
I asked if he cared for a cup of tea and some breakfast. He had arrived pretty early and before he could be prim and proper, I insisted so he accepted. I asked a movie be played for him and left him to attend to other things. Came in at intervals and asked him to fill me in.
He shared what had happened between the scenes I missed and I would leave and return again.

When he was done, my driver took us to the site. Along the way I had conversations that had absolutely nothing to do with the task I was taking him for.

By the time we arrived the site,
He went in and around by himself and came back and initiated conversation this time. He started sharing what the challenges were and proffered solutions. He told us what had caused the problems we were having and how/what to do to overcome them.

I thanked him and then asked a few questions that gave me answers for the interview I needed to have with him.

Asked where he stayed, drove to the front of his house and dropped him off and gave him a little money to have a great weekend.

That was last weekend. I didn’t hear
From him again till this afternoon.

He sent me a very lengthy message of how he hadn’t had a meal on the interview day and a day before he had list last cup of coffee and didn’t know where the next would come from.

How he felt frustrated because the company he worked for had
...downsized without a pay.

Story Short - He wants to work without negotiating a salary for the first 3 months 😊

While I insisted he would be placed on what we had agreed as a team, I thought to share a very valuable lesson most employers and humans would need PostCovid19
It is reasonable to experience increased worry, anxiety and stress about the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak. Managing the risk to mental health during this time means employees will need to have better capacity to fulfil their roles and the likelihood of harm to health is reduced.
People at risk.
Even though you are able to self-isolate in a safe environment and have access to resources to ensure your wellbeing, you cannot even begin to fathom the insurmountable stress being experienced by those without such resources.
Consider how to connect with others: Video calls with your team can help them beat isolation or hypertension from fear of job loss.

Help and support others: Think about how you could help those around you – it could make a big difference to them and can make you feel better too.
Think about why your staff can do without you. Ask them questions to understand their strengths and support them to grow it. As the economy shrinks, the best thing you can give to your team is the knowledge of how to function without you yet allow them to choose to stick with you
You know why?

Cos lots of the people around you now are living in depression and fear and the best thing anyone can do is to ask “Are you OK” and wait for a response.

Drive them hard for results but drive them harder to say how they are doing in an environment that listens.
