With #Myanmar’s deadline to submits its compliance report to the @ICJ_CIJ fast approaching
, there’s been an uptick
of activity – and scrutiny – to discuss its (non) efforts to protect the #Rohingya from genocide. Here’s a short round-up
/1

Last week, the #UNSecurityCouncil held a closed-door
meeting with the UN's Myanmar Envoy @SchranerBurgen1 to discuss the impact of Covid-19 and fighting in Rakhine State. Justice, wasn't on the table but some countries mentioned it anyway. https://bit.ly/3e6T3aP /2

Predictably, the #UNSC remains divided so there wasn’t an outcome, but it’s better than ignoring the serious humanitarian issues and the surge in fighting in Rakhine, which would give #Myanmar (and spoilers in the council, like
) a free pass. https://bit.ly/2Zqvp5a /3

Obviously we can’t settle, either. We’re pushing the #UNSC in NY and in capitals to do more over the coming months, ideally a formal public briefing to raise the heat
on #Myanmar. /4

Yesterday we co-hosted a fantastic panel featuring the fierce
@YangheeLeeSKKU, @lvandenassum and @waiwainu to share their insights about whether Myanmar is doing enough to protect the Rohingya. (No surprise = no). /5

I’d really encourage you to watch the whole webinar – so much
great
analysis & food for thought. You can find it here. #Justice4Rohingya /6

And for anyone wanting to learn more about the Rohingya's plight, the @CPG_USHMM has put together a powerful
exhibit explaining how the Rohingya “became targets of a sustained campaign of genocide”. https://exhibitions.ushmm.org/burmas-path-to-genocide /7

@Nadia_Hardman & I are working on a piece showing that instead of complying with the @CIJ_ICJ's order, #Myanmar has used Covid-19 as a shield
