We get off to a bad start on #horizon with the ‘one in four is mentally ill’ figure and the stated aim of finding the correct diagnosis.

It’s getting worse. His GP has told him he needs ‘antidepressants’ like a diabetic needs insulin. My heart goes out to him but I’m not sure how much of this I can bear to watch. #horizon
Now we are meeting a ‘leading authority in bipolar disorder’ who will no doubt fail to inform him that all the most recent research completely fails to confirm the validity of this - or any - psychiatric diagnosis
#horizon

Lots of important-sounding jargon to dazzle the general public. Hypothymic, co-morbidity, bipolar one, etc. Plus a fancy electronic mood diary. So much more useful than asking ‘What happened?’ And we already know that a LOT happened to Tony #horizon
For those who like to claim that psychiatry is biopsychosocial .... have a look at this illustration of the approach of leading members of the profession and try and spot the ‘psycho’ or the ‘social’ #horizon
Aha. 15 minutes to go and a mention of ‘what happened’. #horizon Heartbreaking.
‘Now that Tony has opened up about his abuse...’ It actually took a journalist to ask the relevant questions. No MH professional seems to have done so. #horizon
Now he’s being told off for drinking. Obviously heavy alcohol use isn’t a good idea but this is a classic case of ‘take our drugs not yours.’ Tony needs to numb himself at the moment, as he’s said #horizon
Let’s wind up with some diagnosis talk, shall we? Not dwell on trauma too much. It’s all about the ‘bipolar spectrum’ at base, you see. #Horizon
Absolutely grim. Copy of ‘A straight talking introduction to psychiatric diagnosis’ and invitation to #AD4E on the way.... #Horizon
Finally: Tony Slattery has a special place in the nation’s heart. He’s been through hell. He was extraordinarily brave to reveal his story. He has been given a medical perspective but he & the general public have the right to know there are others. We all wish him well #horizon
