Hi there! This is Fatuma, Marketing Coordinator for TPM and this is my Master Class- what? Oh. I'm not legally allowed to call it that? Okay fine. This is my instalment of our Behind the Curtain series. Sit back and enjoy... MARKETING TO YOUR AUDIENCE IN 280 CHARACTERS OR LESS
1. TALK TO THE CREATOR(S)
No one knows who this story is for more than the folks who made it. When talking to the artists ask about the themes of the show & it's development history. Is there an archive or a script you can look at? Now you've got context and a place to start!
2. A PICTURE SAYS A 1000 WORDS
Invest in striking imagery that conveys the tone of the show. And don't override your beautiful images with text either, save that for the caption. Let the photo tell a story and we'll want to know more.

Example: photos by @PeterRiddihough
3. SAVE WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
Not everyone will be able to afford a billboard at Yonge and Dundas Square. Lucky for you more people look at their phones then they do at billboards. Test out some targeted ads using social media. They allow you to be super specific & are way cheaper!
4. FIND YOUR CHAMPIONS
When you've identified your audience don't hesitate to reach out to some "influential" folks who you think could be champions of the show. Invite them to opening or a community night. More often than not they'll be enthusiastic about spreading the word!
5. STAND UP AND SHOW OUT
Don't be afraid to get bold and creative! If there's an aspect to your show that can be celebrated make sure everyone knows about it. A proud moment for me was when we had a #BlackOut performance of The Negroes are Congregating.
6. QUID PRO QUO YO!
Connect with other theatre makers with upcoming productions. They can shout out your show in exchange for you shouting out one of theirs later. More exposure for you and more people going to see theatre. Now that's team work.
7. SAVE YOUR WORK
You did it! Now that the show is closed make sure to save your work. Make a folder that includes all of your digital assets, reviews, new contacts. So when you remount or are marketing a similar show later you don't have to start from scratch!
Those are the tips & tricks I've got. If you have any marketing hacks of your own tweet them at us. Marketing evolves all the time so the most important lesson is that you stay curious and keep learning! Thanks for joining me! Back behind the curtain I go.
