RIP @TheAtlantic video team. As you may have heard, we were among the 68 folks laid off today. After 3 years, I'm very sad to be leaving, but very proud of the work we have done together bringing urgent stories to light and giving platforms to underrepresented voices. (THREAD)
It’s been an absolute honor to build The Atlantic Selects into an international destination for short docs across the world. The most insanely talented and fearless filmmakers out there have allowed me to share their work. You can see all 250+ films here: https://www.theatlantic.com/video/series/editors-picks/
When the pandemic hit, I pivoted to reporting/producing videos such as this one, featuring haunting illustrations by enormously talented artist @annalisepasztor and incisive editing by storytelling maven @vishakhadarbha, 2 of my most treasured colleagues https://www.theatlantic.com/video/archive/2020/05/icu-delirium/611155/
My colleague @JeremyRaff has produced some of our most exceptional work over the years. His short doc about family separation put a human face to the story. Watching it for the first time, I ugly-cried. It is, in a word, a masterpiece. https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/569572/family-separation/
My colleague @nicpollock always found the quirkiest stories from every corner of the world. His latest, about a photographer in a northern Canadian community who captured friends and neighbors in quarantine, is an utter life-affirming delight: https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/609736/arctic-portraits/
My colleague @limacake came right out of the gate with this nuanced story of a gamer whose rising celebrity was upended by a cancer diagnosis. Salima is one of the hottest doc-makers out there right now and I can’t wait to see what she does next. https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/591907/allied-gamer/
My colleague @hellofromcath is a veritable wizard of visual journalism, having launched our successful Idea File series, which can be viewed in its entirety here: https://www.theatlantic.com/projects/idea-file/
My colleague @DanielLombroso brought tremendous drive and ambition to Atlantic Studios, most recently with his sensitive portrait of an essential worker here in NYC: https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/610105/zabars/
My colleague @BriannaPressey never failed to think about whose voices needed to be heard most. This is exemplified in her (frankly shocking) doc about D.C.’s maternity desert: https://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/556499/maternity-desert-dc/
Lest you didn't catch this upfront, my colleague @annalisepasztor is an animation wunderkind. Her work immerses you entirely in another dimension. She has a bright future ahead of her. (And she's also a producer!)
And, ICYMI, my colleague @vishakhadarbha is one to watch. Her story instincts are unparalleled. She's a jack of all trades (graphics, producing, reporting... you name it), and working with her has been so fulfilling.
