my opinion on lana del ray’s statement: a thread
let’s get a few things straight before i start this thread: do i love and stan lana ??? yes. do i agree with the fact she called out the sexism and toxic masculinity in the industry ??? yes. but did she kind of fuck up with this statement ??? yes.
here’s were lana went wrong: name dropping. quite a few of those women have to also deal with racism and colourism in the industry. she could’ve her peace and left others out of it. lana just ignored/disregards their struggles.
lana made it seem like they did it to her and she’s the only one that this happens to. but it happens to them too. people have threatened to lynch beyoncé’s family and gave her shit to her black lives matter (blm) performance.
kehlani has never been to number one but she was bullied so badly by the internet that she attempted suicide. ariana has been slut shamed for her clothing and people have blamed her for mac miller’s death. nicki has been given shit from day one and still gets to this day.
regardless of number 1’s, recognition, and awards that these women have gotten. it doesn’t erase and disregard their struggle/oppression. my fellow lana stans need to stop telling people to “learn how to read” and learn about intersectionality.
her statement seemed very “woe is me” and peak white feminism. at the end of the day all those women (including herself) are negatively impacted by the toxic masculinity and sexism in the music industry and they really need to just stand together.
i do love lana and all the other women mentioned in this thread. i have been a stan and participated in stan culture. but one thing i will not do is act like my favs are above god/give them a god complex. just like myself they need to remember and acknowledge their privilege. 💓
