Saw Rhythm movie for a dose of sanity. Here are 3 reasons why Dir.Vasanth > GVM:

1. Can show a married lady’s romance more gracefully
2. Can do beautiful song shoots
3. The only child in the film is actually a child

As bonus we get Nagesh’s irreverent humour & the kid asking for a Lara signed cricket bat.
Vasant serves us an urban romance, a subject we claim GVM is an expert at handling. Rhythm is elegant still than what GVM could do. Meena an independent banking professional just as every other GVM heroines. Arjun though is an educated middle class lad, both placed in Mumbai.
The dialogues are so subtle and metaphorical. Appalam for instance is a recurring prop. Towards the climax Nagesh says “kizhinja appalatha thirumba thekkava mudiyum” alluding to the family’s torn hopes of Arjun’s re-marriage.
Nagesh and Vatsala Gopalan as parents actually play meaningful role in the hero’s life. Their advices and concerns about their son are so practical. Not like GVM’s dads who offer fake motivations to stalk “itho iruku America.”
There’s a mild humour undercurrent throughout the film. Thanks to Nagesh of corse. “Hindu paper iruke, antha mathiri christian paper, muslim paper iruka nu kepa en pondati.” Manivannan & Arjun together again. The usual hanuman to ramar kinda role in Rhythm as he was in mudhalvan
The dialogues between the lovers are nowhere close to cringeworthy like “un kaal adila naan vazhanum.” Or “un kazhuthula vazhanum”. In a phone booth convo Ramesh Arvind asks “enna love panriya? Enna onnume solamatengara?” And Meena goes “thalai aatinene” . Funny but lovely.
Ramesh Arvind-Meena’s romance faces a communal challenge. Similar to GVM’s Karthik-Jessi. Difference is, in Vasant’s film, the lovers act on it & take charge of their lives. Quite different from making cringe calls to your ex 10yrs after, under the pretext of true love.
Its funny to know Vasant’s hero actually goes on to do something realistic in life. He quits his perilous police job owing to family pressure & becomes a common joe. Unlike GVM’s heroes who don’t pass engineering arrears but go on to clear UPSC to become an IPS officer in the end
Also let’s please top giving GVM the top spot for song picturisations. Go watch Rhythm’s ‘Nadhiye nadhiye’ & ‘Katre en vasal vanthay’ before you make such claims. We should also remember Vasant gave us the evergreen ‘Manam virumbude’ earlier.
Arjun finds this tamizh novel on Meena’s work desk. What’s this book about? Vasant’s easter egg to the audience?
