Welcome to the future of work! (FAO @nancymworth) https://twitter.com/tobi/status/1263483496087064579
Initial thoughts: this is going to save a huge amount of money for firms, for whom rent and physical infrastructure is a huge cost. Presumably workers will get a stipend to kit out home offices improve their home internet, but this will be a drop in the bucket...
...compared to other costs. This is offsetting more costs for capital onto the worker, undoubtedly. Working from home is a far less than ideal circumstance most, and it's not going to be a meaningful option for a lot of people, especially those for whom the office...
...might be an escape, and those for whom the home is not a safe place - e.g., those who are in abusive relationships, those who are out in the office (as queer or trans) but not out at home. Women, disproportionately, will bear the most negative effects of this shift.
I'm certain that we'll see more 'high-status' work shifting in this direction. I need to think about this more, but my initial thoughts are that this is not the actions of a firm who cares about its workers, but the actions of a firm who cares solely about accumulating capital.
In this thread the CEO states: "work experience should be the same for everyone who works together at Shopify no matter where they are working from." This is assuming a huge amount about home life and spaces - the home conceptualized as a self-same space identical for everyone?
