TV news ignoring #AmphanSuperCyclone and focusing on Ayodhya, Ram Mandhir and other nonsense while sad is not a surprise. I unsubscribed from all these channels because they will discuss Crow taking shit in Delhi before reporting about street in Calicut going up in smoke.
All the places outside Delhi NCR and Bombay is irrelevant to them unless they get the cue. Otherwise how do u explain the fact that all these mainstream outlets are based in Delhi or Bombay. All of them.
It's a huge fucking continent and u have not one national or English TV news that is not based in Bombay or Delhi. Infact even Bombay is is increasingly being ignored I feel. I will give u example.
Which city is the commercial capital of India?
Bombay, also home of the BSE.
Where are the HQs if major business Newspapers.
Econ Time - Delhi/NCR
Live mint - Delhi/NCR
Business Standard - Delhi
Business Line - Madras (The Hindu group paper).
Financial Express - Delhi
Outlook Business - Delhi
Business Today - Delhi/NCR
There are some exceptions.
Moneycontrol, Forbes India are based in Bombay. Former is the most popular stock market related portal and later is a well known International brand and both are under News18 Group which used to be based on Mumbai but these days are based in Delhi.
India is unable to place equal importance to it's different cities. Skewed media coverage is just a symptom
Bangalore is IT and Tech Capital and home to some of the most brilliant science related institutes. Fine. How many Govt Depts in charge of these things are HQ in Bangalore?
Aadhaar, probably the biggest tech related and the most ambitious Tech related project by Govt of India ever was initially based in Bangalore but soon after was moved to Dili. Are the techies in Delhi more capable than ones in Bengaluru?
AIFF in charge of Football in India has their HQ in New Delhi where not even flies turn up to watch matches (yeah I know Football had a lot of following in Old Delhi). Why are they not based in Kolkata (home to the biggest concentration of Football related clubs and orgs)?
BCCI which was formed long before India got independence and has the financial power to have sufficient independence is based in Bombay. But Sports Council of India and half of the National Sports Federations are based in Delhi for some reason.
Apparently this includes Kayaking Federation. Can I ask if anyone of you have ever seen a professional White Water Rafting tourney happen in Delhi? Then what is the logic of setting up the national fed for Kayaking in Delhi?
Rather than make use of the many cities and it's unique characteristics, the Govt India has over the cource of 70 years become a creature that thinks itself as a Diliwalla. Now this isn't a bad thing if India had true Federation like Germany or USA.
A Govt that sees itself as a New Delhi organisation, fills itself with people who have lived all their life's in Delhi, takes advice from Delhi wallah, sees and interacts with mostly Delhi people also gets to dictate the policy of the entire country.
That is also the reason why every feels like curling up in a polluted cesspool of a city that even the British that build it (New Delhi) didn't want to stay full time (didn't they have summer capital?).
US is a good example to take inspiration from.
They give greater autonomy to it's states and cities. Each city is allowed it's mind space to develop and is given due importance for their own achievements. That is why we don't have The Wall Street Journal being based in DC.
Govt of US is HQ in Washington DC and they have not forced the entire US corporate sector to move their HQ and offices to areas surrounding DC. Maryland is quite a rural and conservative state despite housing Washington DC inside it.
Even US Govt machinery is spread around.
Is FBI, CIA, NSA and US Military HQs located in the same City?
No, they are infact located in different states, all 4 of them.
US Olympic Association is located in a Mid West State, Colarado. US Football is in Indianapolis.
I can go on but u get the idea?
