If white society, the ruling white elite & bipartisan white establishment were truly outraged by Trump, he‘d be gone. Their main complaint about 45 is that he’s uncouth. They’re not interested in confronting or ending racism but in restoring a traditional image of white rulership https://twitter.com/BreeNewsome/status/1170169874263490560
Trump is given reign to embody the most violent impulses of white society, to engage in overt racism & to reinforce racial hierarchy while allowing white moderates to finger Trump as the sole source of the nation’s problems, giving a redemptive pass to the ideology of whiteness.
Joe & Mika are prime examples of this dynamic among the white moderates & the DC elite. They helped normalize Trump in 2016 & made apologies for the conduct of the 45 admin at various points in time (defending Sarah H Sanders for example) but now position themselves as victims.
Steve Schmidt is another example. He was instrumental in giving Palin a platform for stoking racist sentiments against Obama during the 2008 campaign but now laments Trump as a monster that emerged from nowhere, completely antithetical to American politics.
This is all about folks wanting to remove 45 & his worst enablers while avoiding any honest assessment of how Trump came to power, b/c that would require interrogating racism & the politics of whiteness AND it would require being honest about how moderates enabled Trump as well.
This dynamic is also playing out in election where white moderates & conservatives who want Trump out wrestle against any attempt to go further than that, threatening that the only acceptable options r a return to traditional white rule or more heightened terrorism from 45 admin
These limited options are established by white society. The vast majority of BIPoC oppose Trump & always have. Whether Trump remains in office is therefore largely determined by white society & prominent white moderates warn repeatedly against any push for substantive change.
Instead of using this as an opportunity to push for structural change or to address any of the factors that made Trump’s rise possible, the white establishment is using this as an opportunity to cement the pre-Obama status quo. They want a conservative white Democratic ticket.
Any push for anything different, by having a progressive and/or Black VP candidate, is met with resistance. Why? Again, they want a return to the USA as it was before 2008. That is their area of alignment with Trump fascism & why they fear progressivism more than Trumpism.
Trump & co will continue to commit crimes in plain view and will be met with less resistance from the political establishment than efforts to get rent & debt relief. They’re more closely aligned w/ Trump ideologically than w/ the concerns of working class BIPoC.
