Just gonna go out and say that nearly every young creative that I have worked with who didn’t have prior corporate experience has not been able to get the job done. https://twitter.com/abxola/status/1263429341104480257
I love a creative or aspiring creative who used to be work as an accountant, consultant etc. Way more competent, in my opinion.
My unpopular opinion: Too many people have spent too much time on twitter seeing ‘don’t work for free’, ‘know your value’ etc. that they over-value their work, don’t bring much to the table, don’t realise what it takes to be competent and don’t realise that they are incompetent.
When you have worked in a structured organisation with twelve hour days during busy season doing non-creative tasks that you must complete to a very high standard, you have a more realistic outlook on life and work.
S/O KPMG. Best thing that ever happened to me.
Don’t underestimate how beneficial all these days you spend working your 9-5 job will be to your more creative endeavour when you embark on it. The skills you pick up from some corporate jobs propel you forward in ways that you don’t know until hindsight.
When I should have been soaking up all the free training on the KPMG website and improving my accounting skills, I was myopic and complaining about the job. I learned a lot but could have learned way more, built more relationships, and set myself up in an even better position.
