I found out who this week's episode of Mrs. America centers on, and I don't suppose it's a spoiler to say that it focuses on a character that is not Flo Kennedy, the real-life person Niecy Nash plays. Personally, it's a bummer because she was the one figure I knew nothing about.
Instead of knowing more about Flo, we're spending time with characters we already know and that includes characters who are entirely fictional.
But the really galling thing is that the only woman of color to get her own episode was Shirley Chrisholm, and that is even after the show made a point of explaining tokenism and having Margaret Sloan object to being the only POC on the Ms. magazine staff.
Doesn't it seem like the show did the same thing that it made a point saying was bad? Would be happy to see Flo get her own miniseries though.
I mean, good job Mrs. America for making us get the feels for a fictional character.
I kinda feel like they called this episode “Houston” because calling it “Alice” would have drawn to much attention to them centering a whole episode on a fictional character.
Anyway, I felt like this criticism of Mrs. America was important but my tweet earlier today about Dixie Kong got way more of a reaction, so maybe representation in prestige dramas really doesn’t matter. Congrats to Cate on her Iron Lady moment.
