the recent bokuto chapter threw a lot of us off and had us considering chapter 374 being our goodbye to oikawa in the haikyuu series, but a lot of us aren’t considering one thing about the recent closing mini arcs of the monster generation: the ones that send them off.
for atsumu, we had osamu and kita help close his arc. for bokuto, it was fukurodani. for hoshiumi, we had sachiro. it’s pretty blatant what the common factor here is: they’re the respective character’s pillar/pillars of support and catalyst for growth.
in other words, furudate stated that these monstrous athletes, no matter how unattainable their abilities may seem, are still deriving strength from the people that supported them years ago in high school. hoshiumi’s case is slightly different, since he was more of the pillar,
but with his closing arc, we got to see their roles reverse a bit: in the same spot where hoshiumi consoled sachiro about being able to quit volleyball, sachiro was now comforting hoshiumi. which brings me to the rather obvious question: what about oikawa’s pillar of strength?
other than kagehina, furudate has emphasized iwaoi’s partnership the most in the series. to say goodbye to oikawa without even a mention of iwaizumi, much less his presence, simply feels wrong.
if the seijoh extra scene was oikawa’s last appearance in the series, it would make sense. but it wasn’t, which only leaves us safe to assume that oikawa’s farewell will include iwaizumi, in the very least. it would be lonely otherwise, to say goodbye to him
without addressing his rivalry with ushikage, nor his pillar of strength (who we are also yet to see defeat oikawa, as was promised). also like hiruhoshi (and kagehina, asanoya and tsukiyama) we haven’t really seen the role of the pillar being reversed.
in other words, the end of the monster generation’s arcs has made me confident that oikawa’s final appearance will involve iwaizumi in the very least, and ushikage for old time’s sake. as far as their dynamic goes, if time allows we might see oikawa support iwa for a change.
i may have totally stated the obvious here, but i haven’t seen anyone point out how much oikawa’s (assumed) last appearance contrasted the monster generation’s. there wasn’t much closure other than the fact that he seemed more confident. we also haven’t seen timeskip iwa, who was
one of the more major minor characters. like, we saw hyakuzawa for god’s sake :| so yeah, i’m not too keen on believing this was the last of oikawa. we might not see him win it all, but if furudate follows their usual pattern, we should get closure, and a less lonely goodbye.
i forgot to mention one important thing: even for the end of the main arc, which is kagehina’s arc, their biggest support systems are present to send them off: each other and the rest of karasuno. so for oikawa, a significant character, to not get treated the same would be cruel.
totally forgot to plug my au. go support
