Ok fuck it. My take on the bootleg drama, as an international bway fan. Think about it this way. Sports matches are all filmed and telecast, and you can often get a better view by watching them on tv. But stadiums are still ALWAYS filled by people who want to watch it live. 1/n
Think about music concerts. You can have your fav artist’s/band’s music RIGHT ON YOUR PHONE with perfect quality but people STILL go to concerts. Think about standup. You’ve seen all of John Mulaney’s specials but if he came to your city YOUD STILL GO. 2/n
People UNDERSTAND the difference b/w watching smth filmed and watching it live, and they WANT the live experience. But it’s just not possible for a lot of people! I live in INDIA. Flights to NYC, hotel rooms, and then the price of bway tickets themselves are too much for me. 3/n
So watching filmed things is the only way I can enjoy theatre. It’s made me want to be able to spend a month in NYC going to all the shows I can, but that’s not a reality for me rn. As for so many other international fans. If you want theater to become more popular, 4/n
You need to make it more accessible. Eg: all the proshots being put on YouTube during the lockdown has introduced so many people across the world to theater!! Those performers now have more recognition!. Theatre accessibility is a bonus for FANS & PERFORMERS. That’s all. 5/5
