After reflecting on my first year of university, I realized I have some things I would love to share with the incoming class of 2024 (or to anyone who would like to read).
A thread (1/12)
A thread (1/12)
Disclaimer: This is my personal experience, and the following are things that I learned throughout my first year. I acknowledge that everyone is different and everyone& #39;s experiences will be different - this is simply a thread of my takeaways :)(2/12)
1 - Learn to enjoy the present. There will always be another task to complete or another test to study for. Try not to wait until after those things are completed to finally enjoy your day/week/semester! (3/12)
2 - Establish relationships with your peers and your professors/instructors! By putting yourself out there and establishing these relationships, you create a support system for yourself, and you can also create some lifelong friendships in the process. (4/12)
3 - Give back to the community! If you can, this is an awesome way to get involved and explore the new community that you are now a part of! (5/12)
4 - That being said, if you can, keep in touch with your existing communities too! The @girlsmentorship community and @ManjaksGym community are two that I am still involved with, and it is something that I missed dearly during my first year of school. With GEM, I was ... (6/12)
... lucky enough to be involved in a promotional campaign this past February, and it was so nice seeing everyone again and meeting some of the new mentees! The @WeWork space at Queen and Bay is unlike anything I’ve seen before! Such a cool experience. (7/12)
5 - Take photos! Take them whenever you can, they are so nice to look back on. I wish I did this more, but I am happy that I took some in the most seemingly random times. For example, during our second NOCAT weekend @MacBHSc, I asked my group to take a picture with ... (8/12)
... our (VERY preliminary) hypothesis, and I am so happy I did because it is one of my most favourite photos of the year. We worked so hard each time the NOCAT came around, and I have nothing but good memories with my group! See the iconic photo below (consent was given). (9/12)
6 - Don& #39;t be hard on yourself! I used to let myself get down about the smallest things, but now I let myself learn from the experience, let it go, and move on. This way, I am able to process my emotions, and do not let it hinder my future performance in school/in life. (10/12)
7 - Similarly, try not to compare! It is much easier said than done, but when you focus on yourself and your work, you& #39;re doing yourself a huge favour, trust me. The best piece of advice I was given this year was to never compare your cocoon to someone else& #39;s butterfly. (11/12)
If you made it this far, I hope that this thread was somewhat useful, and I hope that you enjoyed the read! 2024s, please reach out to me if you have any questions about school, life, @McMasterU, anything really - I am more than happy to share my experiences with you! (12/12)
