The larger issue is that men often think they have license to violate women with impunity. That claiming “boys will be boys” is an acceptable defense for traumatizing women.

I’m so thankful that many courageous women I went to high school with are setting the record straight: The days of unchallenged patriarchy are over. The country club is closed.
When men (or others!) speak ignorantly or act violently, there will be consequences. It’s that simple.

Don’t take it from me, though. Men should not be taking the lead in these conversations. Our job is to listen to—and stand in solidarity with—the women we know and love. More accurately, our job is whatever women tell us it is.
