The cellphone that captured the iconic photo of the devastating Camp Fire in 2018 died yesterday. It was 3 years old.
(An obit thread)
The cause of death is unknown, but my millennial son assured me it was old age. He said 3 years old is ancient. He also believes you should buy a $900 phone at the end of each week just to keep up with technology.
The phone lived a full life in a few short years. It taught me how to make small fish look enormous by holding them very close to the camera.
It helped me relay to my envious friends on a Friday afternoon that I was having a beer in the backyard and they were not.
It allowed me to take photos of every meal before I ate because why not?
It accompanied me to Italy, where I took approximately 308 selfies with a beautiful American woman.
It helped me find a very large Buddha in the hills of Japan through the magic of Google Maps.
It translated a menu written entirely in kanji symbols so I didn’t accidentally order food that was still alive.
And in its final days it captured the domestic unrest of cats and dogs amid the shelter in place orders.
When the phone store employee offered to switch my photos to my new phone, he asked if I really needed to transfer 4,474 photos. I said yes, all are works of art.
RIP
