Ann Mikolowski &
The Alternative Press

Ann Mikolowski (1940-1999) was a born & raised Detroit artist known for her miniature portraits, pointillist landscapes, and as a co-founder of the experimental art & poetry newsletter The Alternative Press.
She started painting 2” x 3” portraits early in her career, first of fellow Detroit artists and poets and later more famous figures. The most well-known is her 1988 portrait of Black Mountain poet Robert Creeley, a friend and regular contributor to the Alternative Press.
Ann founded the Alternative Press in 1969 with her husband, minimalist poet Ken Mikolowski, printing from their Detroit basement on a used letterpress. Each issue consisted of a manila envelope filled with anything from illustrated poems to custom postcards to bumper stickers.
Each newsletter featured a mix of Detroit poets and more famous poets, especially from the Black Mountain and New York Schools. They were all encouraged to mail in their own handwritten poems and drawings to include in each issue.
Her pointillist drawings of postcard-ready landscapes were a regular part of the Press, and were featured in its yearly calendar. One of her pointillist landscapes was chosen to represent Michigan in the 1991 Absolut Statehood campaign.
The Alternative Press ran from 1969-1999, when Ann tragically died from breast cancer at age 59. Ken mailed out one final issue in 2006, taking seven years to collect poems and drawings from all the artists they had featured over the newsletter’s 30 years.
