Having a software background I consider myself very savvy when it comes to phishing scams but I just got scammed so hard. I'll give cliffs. Lady calls from an 800 number saying she's from Chase fraud prevention. Calling in reference to a card# last 4 that I do have w/ Chase (1/6)
Am I speaking w/ Johnnie Moreno? Yes. For verification purposes we are going to send you a text. I receive text. I look and see I've received many texts in this thread from Chase in the past. I verify numbers. Thank you Mr Moreno. (2/6)
Mr Moreno did you authorize a charge for $945.15 at Macy's? No. How about $1024.11 at Saks 5th Avenue? No. Ok Mr Moreno we are going to have to close your account & send you a new card. After a few min we are about to hang up & I say wait where are you sending my new card? (3/6)
She gives me my old address. I give her my AirBNB address. I thank her. 20 min later Olga gets a call from Chase. Hi Olga did you authorize a charge for $887.55 from Costco? No. Olga your card has been been stolen and we need to close your account and issue a new card. (4/6)
Long story short. The original caller had my credit card number & added it to an apple pay account. Then needed me to recite the code to verify. Once it was verified with my card on their phone they tried to use Apple Pay at Costco buy Chase detected it was potential fraud (5/6)
The text that I received was from the same number Chase had communicated with me in the past. The 2nd phone call was identified on caller ID as (Potential SPAM). However, the 2nd call was actually Chase. The first was the phishing scam. I've attached the screenshot that got me.
