More importantly black men have to speak up and speak out against this toxic culture of harassment & abuse towards black women. I’m sorry you went through this. This was absolutely abhorrent and unacceptable. https://twitter.com/koreytjohnson/status/1262828951833137152
‘Not all black men’ stakeholders, now is your time to prove it. Everything about this situation is messed up but mirrors the reality of black women always having to rely on themselves, being disrespected and unprotected. https://twitter.com/royaltimue/status/1262525604945158145?s=21 https://twitter.com/royaltimue/status/1262525604945158145
Black men must vehemently condemn this. Black men must hold other black men who perpetuate this toxic culture of harassment towards black women accountable. Black men have the responsibility to protect black women and not just those in proximity to us. https://twitter.com/koreytjohnson/status/1262860231434022913?s=21 https://twitter.com/koreytjohnson/status/1262860231434022913
This also highlights how dangerous the ‘strong black woman’ narrative is. It puts black women in harms way, strips them of their womanhood, paints them as aggressors in situations where they’re the victims, and makes people not intervene because they think they can ‘handle it’.
I read a comment under one of @ChrissiesWay’s YouTube videos that said how messed up it is that black men are over-praised for our looks of being ‘fine kings’, while black women are over-praised for being ‘tough and strong’. And that speaks volume about our dynamics.
