inuyasha (犬夜叉) is a fictional character created by rumiko takahashi, protagonist of her manga series inuyasha, first published in 1996, and its anime adaptation, first aired in 2000.

inuyasha's name means “dog demon”. he is a hanyō or half demon, a hybrid of human and inugami (a type of dog yōkai). he was born to a daiyōkai, the dog demon inu no taishō (or tōga), and a human noblewoman, izayoi. his father was the strongest demon of his time.

inuyasha has a half older brother, sesshomaru, son of inu no taishō and a demon woman.

inuyasha is the owner of the tessaiga (鉄砕牙), an immensely powerful sword forged from one of his father's fangs by the yōkai swordsmith tōtōsai. the tessaiga is able to absorb demonic powers and possess a great number of different techniques.

inuyasha inherited the tessaiga from his father. the sword transforms when he wields it.
