Thread on how to pray tuhajjud .

There is no specific way to pray tahajjud, in terms of what the worshipper should recite after al-Faatihah in each rak‘ah. So the Muslim should pray 2 rak‘ahs in sets of 2 (2,4,6...),reciting whatever he/she is able to of the Holy Qur’an, then he/she should pray Witr after that.

Witr:The minimum number of rak’ahs for Witr is one rak’ah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Witr is one rak'ah at the end of the night.”

Witr (3 rak’ahs): If a person prays three rak’ahs of Witr this may be done in two ways, the simpler one is to pray the first rak’ah like you would for a normal salah,the second pray as you did the first(not sitting after the sujood) and the third pray as you would for Maghrib.

Witr:In the first rak’ah one should recite Surah al A’la(87)In the second one should recite Soorat al-Kaafiroon (109), and in the third Soorat al-Ikhlaas (112).

To summarise, you should pray the night prayer by praying 2,4,6,8 etc rak’ahs in sets of 2(like fajr) then pray Witr in odd numbers(1,3,5 etc) the lowest being 1. Witr should not be prayed like Maghrib and one should only sit and give tashahhud and tasleem on the last rak’ah.

The first rak’ah for Witr should be recited outloud with al Fatiha followed by surah al A’la, the second should be recited outloud with Al fatiha followed by Surah al kafiroon(do not sit down after the sujood), the third should be recited outloud al fatiha followed by al ikhlas.
