Senate has confirmed GOP @FEC nominee Trey Trainor on party lines. As I said before, the norm busting that got us here (moving a single GOP nominee while ignoring the qualified person the Dems named) doesn’t bode well for how the reconstituted agency will operate. But here we are
Now that they have their quorum back, commissioners should move ASAP to address one area where there is at least some nominal common ground: the urgent need to combat foreign interference in our elections.
Meaningful action would entail, at a minimum, moving forward quickly with enforcement cases involving illegal campaign spending (which have no doubt been piling up) and finally finishing the long-stalled rulemaking to boost transparency for online ads.
I’m not overly optimistic about their ability to achieve consensus even on this low-hanging fruit, but I would love to be proven wrong. The @FEC’s mission is too important for it to stay on the sidelines, now more than ever. Time to get to work.
