TIME OF DEATH: 8:05AM. I call the family. We grieve together.

The phone call is a balance of being present and being angry.

Presence is needed because families deserve my full attention during uncertainty.

Anger is needed because an inept president spread this virus. THREAD
All my patients have Covid-19. And the question I’m often asked is:

“Why isn’t my dad getting better?”

I talk about lungs and inflammation. I use analogies to explain oxygenation.

But my response is incomplete. Yes, this story is about a virus...and egregious incompetence.
Earlier this month, a patient with Covid-19 asked me, “Will you fight for me, doc?”

“Of course,” I replied. “I’ll fight for you.”

Inside the hospital, fighting for someone can mean getting prompt answers. Outside the hospital it means stopping systemic disease.
On one side of this pandemic, health care workers are giving their all.

On the other side is a disease, a president who fumbles, lies, colludes, and blames anyone but himself.

I suppose this is where the being angry part comes in.
Today, over 90,000 people have now died from Covid-19 in the US.

This comes after Trump said, “We have it totally under control. It’s one person…”

This comes after Trump said, “Looks like by April...it miraculously goes away.”

It’s still here. People are still dying.
Meanwhile, I call another patient’s family. She’s not doing well.

They decide to transition to comfort cares. She dies within a few hours.

They say, "We were afraid this pandemic would be bad."

I want to say I wish our president had their foresight. I give condolences instead.
It’s not a stretch to say that blood drips from the hands of this administration. Idiocy led to delays which led to more delays which led to viral spread.

The president says, "I don& #39;t take responsibility at all" for those delays. We aren& #39;t surprised.
I& #39;ve been thinking a lot about that question: “Are you going to fight for me?”

Fighting for someone must take on a new meaning.

It means making sure this never happens again. It means fighting and organizing, from now until November, to remove the disease running this country.
