This order is a grievous attack on human rights and fails to protect public health.
This so-called "emergency" measure was never about COVID.

1: This brilliant piece from @LGuttentag on how the obscure provision on which this order relies, 42 USC 265, was never meant to propel a shadow immigration regime, and how the order is "medically gerrymandered" to target people seeking protection: https://bit.ly/2LIMsqV
2: A stinging critique from key committees ( @HouseForeign, @HouseJudiciary, and @HomelandDems) of the paltry legal justification provided by DHS & State as to why they can do this consistent with US obligations to asylum-seekers and unaccompanied children: https://bit.ly/3dYVigk
3: This great article from @oonahathaway dissecting all three sentences of the administration's legal justification for how this order complies with our international treaty obligations to asylum-seekers (it doesn't): https://bit.ly/2LJKKWo
4: A brand-new @humanrights1st report on how the order has propelled mass expulsions of 20,000 people, including asylum-seekers and at least 1,000 unaccompanied children, highlighting just some of the devastating human costs - https://bit.ly/2WJiedQ
5: From yesterday, a letter from leading public health experts at universities across the country condemning @CDCgov's order, which, in their words, "fails to further public health."

And @priscialva's story about the letter: https://cnn.it/2WJhvcA

And @priscialva's story about the letter: https://cnn.it/2WJhvcA
6: And, of course, @amnestyusa's comment challenging this cruel policy, which violates the human right to seek asylum and our treaty commitments, which our org and so many others have fought hard to see reflected in domestic law: https://bit.ly/2LEiFjg
So there you have it. Every which way you look at it, from public health to human rights, from our domestic laws to our international treaty obligations, this order is ill-advised and unlawful - pure xenophobia masquerading as a public health measure.
