#Homiletics2020 is almost done for the day, with an interview with Leah Schade presented by Karoline Lewis.
(Trying to find the correct video link that will load is leaving me cross-eyed. Thankful for friends and for Twitter)
Schade: "The planet cannot metabolize what we're doing to it. The Earth is finally getting the Sabbath."
Schade: "Earth is finally getting its Jubilee."
Schade is finding that preachers are concerned about their ability to triage crises.
Schade: If we could make massive changes because of this virus, we can make massive changes about the climate, pollution, nature.
Schade has been teaching students to preach as if there were a person who's never been to church before, never heard a sermon before. Now that's not a hypothetical with online worship.
Schade thinks it is important for pastors preaching about climate change to have an eco-theology.
Schade conducted an interesting survey to find out what topics preachers preach on and what they avoid. Women's reproduction was the top avoided, environmental issues was next.
Schade did another survey with congregations. "Climate change" was too political to talk about. But "creation" was not. So can we talk about climate change without talking about climate change?
Schade has developed work around a sermon-dialogue-sermon style of discussing difficult issues.
