Ska predates punk by about 25 years, it didn’t take until the 2nd generation. Mariachi is also extremely stylistically different than ska. I get this tweets a joke, but like it makes me think people really think ska is just throwing horns over punk music lol https://twitter.com/papa_squatt/status/1260757686766927873
Horns isn’t even a definite aspect of ska. Ska from the late 50s - 70s didn’t use horns much (aside from the skatalites who were somewhat of an anomaly) horns were more accents than a main thing. Ska is definitely by the Afro-Caribbean rhythms with 50s popular songwriting
Example: you’re wondering now by Andy and Joey from 1964 has no horns but is a staple ska song (and I parody it for my credits solely to tell elitists/purists that I know the history lmao) ska took the verse chorus structure with heavy syncopation
another prime example. There’s horns throughout a lot of this, but it’s not the main focus, mostly texture on offbeats, sometimes a solo behind a chorus, but not a full horn section
The specials, an iconic ska band of the second wave had barely any horns (tbh I can only think of horns on a message to you Rudy, pretty absent from their other stuff) at this point ska was in its second wave with barely a heavy emphasis on horns
Bad manners was a band that really started to push this heavy heavy horn driven sound their horn section was fat and they led to be the inspiration of bands like the bosstones, the toasters, and fishbone in America.
the bosstones was one of few bands who had a heavy involvement in both the underground American 2-tone scene as well as American hardcore. Their early stuff is 2-tone + hardcore, and it took until the late 80s for punk to REALLY start mixing with ska
I feel a bit wack dampening the joke but simultaneously I see these kind of jokes all the time and this is why people think ska is some orange-County birthed genre of white dudes speeding up reggae and mixing it with blink 182. SOMEONEs gotta provide the rich history ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
And I know there’s a lotta nuances I often miss but cut me some slack I have like 280 characters to explain a genre that honestly is one of the biggest genres out there lol
