People, please stop saying that the #ImmigrationBill ends the free movement of British citizens and that it introduces a points-based immigration system. It does neither! Continuing to describe the bill in these false terms inadvertently helps to hide what it really does.
And that’s no good, obviously:
1) it removes the rights of EU citizens in the UK without adequate protections
2) it gives the Home Secretary the power to introduce a new (not defined in the bill) immigration system without parliamentary scrutiny.
We must focus on these issues.
The Govt will undoubtedly love the misrepresentation of the bill in much of the media etc because it has basically hidden/distracted from its actual purpose. That can’t continue because it’s so vital that it’s improved. Please don’t inadvertently help the Govt get away with it.
That’s vital not just for EU citizens now, but also future immigrants because the bill significantly expands the hostile environment and the Exec power base around that. The struggle to end the hostile environment is uphill already, so please let’s not add further hurdles. /end
